Creating the perfect guest sleep experience.

The Best Bedding for the Best Night Sleep

Selecting quality bedding will help your guests to enjoy a great night’s sleep time after time. Above all, we recommend bed linen that’s made of 100% high-grade long-staple cotton. Quality 100% cotton bedding will have a direct impact on how long your bedding will last and how well your guests sleep. It is not only breathable and soft, but it also has superior strength over polycotton or polyester alternatives, so although it may be slightly pricier, given the right care, it will last longer and will be more cost effective in the long run.

Why do thread counts matter – is higher count always better?

300tc or 400tc linens woven from good quality cotton will have all the luxe factor you need. Thread count is no measure of quality, it is purely a construction term. High quality products are dependent on the quality of the yarn, the processing and the finishing. Thread count is the number of threads in a square inch of fabric and to squeeze more in, the yarn needs to be finer which tends to mean the yarn is higher quality.  However, the yarn can be twisted in pairs to double the thread count artificially. There also comes a point where the number of threads are so tightly packed the fabric becomes impermeable. Look for a minimum of 12 stitches per inch on hems to ensure that the linen will last for many years. If your rooms are particularly well heated, then a lower thread count in a high quality cotton may be more suitable. Many of our luxury hotel clients find 300 thread sheets are the perfect balance in terms of luxury and practicality.

How should you layer your bed for the ultimate night sleep and what kit do you need to create a good sleep environment?

BED

Start with the foundations of a good night’s sleep: a great bed and mattress. Test before buying to make sure it offers the right support, comfort and space, then style with a beautiful upholstered headboard to create some wow factor.

BEDLINEN

A 300 or 400 thread count sheet woven from good quality cotton usually provides a luxurious experience. It is also the thread count of choice for many top hotels. We recommend classic white sheets rather than coloured as these stay fresh looking and never go out of style.

PILLOWS

There is no ‘best for everyone pillow’ – everyone’s sleeping position and personal preferences can affect the one they’ll love the best. Many top hotels find a high quality feather and down pillow such as our Savoy pillow, provides guests with the perfect balance of luxury, softness and support. Place one or two pillows per person on top of the bed sheet.

DUVET

A snug, billowy feather and down duvet is the mainstay of any luxury retreat or hotel. Many top hotels use a natural filled 10.5 tog duvet to get the right weight, look and feel for their hotel rooms and to create a fabulous night’s sleep for their guests. Our most requested are our Savoy 10.5 tog duck feather and down in a 100% down proof cotton casing.

What’s the most common sleep / bedding myth?

“Egyptian cotton is best” - forever quoted as synonymous with luxury bedding, the main attraction of Egyptian cotton is that it can be used to make long staple yarn. Using long staple over short staple yarn helps produce cloth that is softer and smoother to the touch, both very desirable characteristics of high-quality bedlinen.

Thankfully the production of cotton to make long staple yarn is not the sole preserve of Egypt’s Nile Delta, and not all cotton grown in the region produces long staple yarn. Given the worldwide supply of so-called ‘Egyptian cotton’ far outstrips the physical production, it’s easy to see why confusion and misinformation reign supreme.

If you can only invest in just one product, what’s best to spend on?

We think that the pillow is the single most important component of any fantastic sleep experience so it makes sense to invest in the best quality pillow you can afford.

The first thing to remember when choosing your pillows is that it’s entirely personal preference, no two people sleep the same or want the same from a pillow.

The quality of the pillows isn’t only defined by the percentage of down in them, it’s the quality of the filling and not all down and feather is created equal in terms of cleanliness and plumpness.

Investing in high quality ingredients means that your pillow will plump up and retain its shape and support for far longer. A quick way to test your pillows is to place it over your arm and if it sags in the middle it could be time for a change.

Worried your guests can’t have natural fill pillows for allergen reasons? High quality feathers and down, which are super clean and encased in a high density case with double stitched seams means nothing can escape so will suit almost all guests. It’s also been clinically proven that synthetic pillows hold more bedbugs than natural fill ones and that there are significantly more people who have reactions to bedbugs compared to those who react to feathers. It is also worth considering the unsung hero - a pillow protector to prolong the pillow’s lifespan and add an extra layer of comfort.
